Morocco: Autonomy plan strengthens UN pact for the future --[Reported by Umva mag]

Morocco does not envisage a solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue outside the framework of the United Nations and under the exclusive auspices of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, through his personal envoy.

The Permanent Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, stressed that the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom was the only effective and forward-looking solution for the Moroccan Sahara.

Speaking in New York on Wednesday, he reiterated Morocco’s commitment to a negotiated and inclusive solution.

“By submitting this initiative to the Security Council in 2007, Morocco took the courageous decision to opt for a negotiated, non-imposed solution, an inclusive, impartial and forward-looking approach, rather than relying on an outdated vision,” Mr. Hilale told the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.

The ambassador also reiterated Morocco’s commitment to the principles and values of the United Nations Covenant for the Future, a framework adopted by the General Assembly on the occasion of its 75^th anniversary on September 21, 2020. This Covenant defines the fundamental principles and values that UN Member States must respect in order to resolve conflicts and build resilient societies, while promoting regional integration and cooperation.

Mr. Hilale stressed that Morocco’s autonomy plan “fits perfectly” with the main objectives of the pact. The Kingdom was committed to strengthening regional and sub-regional cooperation and laying the foundations for sustainable development in a number of sectors.

However, he expressed concern over Algeria’s actions, which deviate from these principles by breaking off diplomatic relations, closing its borders, imposing visas on Moroccan citizens and supporting separatist groups.
