JAILHOUSE ROMANCE EXPOSED: Tutor & Inmate's Secret Unlocked!

For four years, Melissa Murphy worked within the walls of HMP Chelmsford, a teacher dedicated to preparing inmates for life beyond bars. Her role demanded unwavering adherence to protocol, a constant vigilance that protected both the prison and the vulnerable individuals within it.

The first unsettling sign emerged when a colleague attempted to enter a classroom where Murphy and an inmate were alone. The door was locked from the inside, and Murphy’s keys – keys that were to remain securely attached to her person at all times – were missing. This simple act shattered the established order, raising immediate and serious concerns.

An investigation swiftly followed Murphy’s arrest on December 11, 2023. A search of her home revealed a disturbing collection of letters, detailing a deeply inappropriate exchange between the teacher and the prisoner. The discovery of a photograph – the inmate’s image resting within her bedroom – painted a chilling picture of a boundary irrevocably crossed.

Police are continuing to search for Hadush Kebatu, who was accidentally released from HMP Chelmsford yesterday while being transferred to an immigration detention centre, mere weeks into his 12-month sentence for sex offences committed in Epping earlier this year. Police say he was last seen in London after taking the train from Chelmsford shortly after his release. Kebatu, a migrant from Ethiopia who crossed the English channel in a small boat, was convinced of sexual assault and other offences while staying at the Bell Hotel in Epping. Her employment was immediately terminated, the trust placed in her irrevocably broken. The charges came via postal requisition on February 12, 2025, culminating in a guilty plea at Chelmsford Crown Court on November 28th to one count of misconduct in a public office.

Detective Constable Becky Sparrow emphasized the gravity of Murphy’s actions, highlighting the inherent power imbalance at play. Prisoners are, by their very situation, profoundly vulnerable, and those entrusted with their care must never exploit that vulnerability.

Sparrow explained that Murphy’s conduct wasn’t simply a personal failing, but a betrayal of the entire criminal justice system. The inappropriate relationship placed both individuals at risk, compromising the safety and security of the prison itself.

The investigation, conducted in close collaboration with HMP Chelmsford’s security department, meticulously built a case that left Murphy with no viable defense. Her actions had eroded the integrity of the system, exploiting a vulnerable man and, ultimately, exposing herself to potential harm as well.

Now, the courts will determine the consequences of her choices, a reckoning for a breach of trust that reverberates far beyond the walls of HMP Chelmsford.
