Heavy rain has wreaked havoc on railways and roads, leaving a car submerged on a major carriageway after flash flooding.

The A421 turned into a murky lake after flooding in Bedfordshire, closing the entire carriageway in both directions.

It comes as heavy rain is forecast to continue until late tonight, with more than a month’s rain expected in some areas today alone.

Elsewhere, a driver was rescued from a floating car after it became trapped in flood water in Wellington, Sutton.

Five Tube lines remain partially suspended after flooding – Piccadilly, London Overground, District and Metropolitan lines – while National Rail has warned of disruption across the rail network.
