Ethiopia’s Amhara rebels beat hasty retreat from fighting --[Reported by Umva mag]

After two days of intense fighting in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, rebels otherwise known as ‘Fano forces’ hastily withdrew from Gondar, a major city in the northern part of the country, witnesses have said.

According to information reaching APA on Friday, Fano forces are now camping within a 10 kilometer radius of Gondar city, seizing advantageous military positions.

Government joint forces including the national defense forces, anti riot and militia took part in the two-day fighting in which more than 108 fighters were killed from both sides.

Eyewitnesses told APA that 100 of the corpses were seen with government military uniforms.

The witnesses said during the battle in Gondar city, Fano forces were in control of many areas and government forces resorted to using heavy weaponry in the city and killed at least 20 civilians including women and children.

Before launching an attack on Gondar city on Tuesday this week, Fano forces took full control of Dabat and Debark towns (both major towns in North Gondar) and many other districts in the area.

The Fano forces claimed they have killed well over 100 government soldiers and captured more than 40 including forces from anti-riot and police.

APA learned that the Fano forces that are not yet under a single command have grown big in size.

The Ethiopian Defense Forces did not remark about the fighting in Gondar city and surrounding towns.
