The Perfect singer also entered X Factor in 2008 as a solo artist and reached the judges’ house stage of the ITV singing competition. He returned two years later and was put in a boy band, One Direction, with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. KISS presenter Marvin appeared on Hits Radio on Friday, as he recalled when he first met the One Direction star when he was just 14. An emotional Marvin said: ‘It’s been a very, very strange 24 hours. Like most people, I heard the news late last night and the first feeling was shock and just sadness to see in black and white the news. “It was just shocking and today has been a rollercoaster of emotions an ultimately you just feel for Liams’ family and his son, his Mum, Dad his friends. “It hasn’t properly hit home yet. “I spoke to a few people on the phone on the way into work today and everyone just has mixed emotions – it’s shocking news. It’s hard to put into words…” Marvin said he and Liam had an instant connection and called him his “little brother”. He opened up about the special memories they shared when he first auditioned, saying: “Obviously, JLS did the X Factor in 2008 and One D did it in 2010 but the difference with Liam – to me and to the rest of the JLS boys – was that we knew him in 2008 as he auditioned for the X Factor when you were allowed to be 14. He was just the best – it’s weird because we were naturally drawn to each other. “I can picture it now, we were in the car park of the O2 Arena and we’d all got past the first round and it was like the second stage and Liam just warmed to us.  “He was literally like our little brother he was 14 years old, he was a kid, we were kids. I would have been about 22, 23 and I just put my arm around him and we took him under our wing and it was like he was a fifth member of the band because he was there by himself so we looked after him.” Marvin recalled: “It didn’t work out that year for him and he was naturally devastated and I remember putting my arm around him and saying ‘listen you are a great talent you’re a great kid its going to work out for you just come back again’ and that’s what he did. “I can picture speaking to his Mum, she was with him as he was so young, and she would say to us to look after him so that’s what we did. “ The Everybody in Love singer said that Liam’s global fame made his proud – saying “he achieved way beyond his wildest expectations”. He added: “To see how far he came as an artist, I was so proud of him, he went from this young 14 -year-old with massive stars in his eyes to literally becoming one of the biggest artists in the world. “He has an incredible legacy, an amazing artist he had a great solo career as well. He achieved way beyond his wildest expectations… “His passion for music you can’t over look that, he was a great songwriter as well, wrote a lot of the songs for the boys, but he just loved singing and I’ll always remember that about him. “What has given me a sort of bit of comfort today is knowing that he achieved everything that he wanted to achieve in his life and more. “It doesn’t feel real that he’s not here and that’s going to take some time to get used to.” Champagne, prescription drugs, white powder and foil wraps were all found in Liam’s trashed hotel room where he plummeted to his death from the balcony at around 5pm. Fellow hotel guests revealed how the star was acting in a “disturbing” manner shortly before his death, with Liam admitting to one woman: “I used to be in a boy band – that’s why I’m so f**ked up.” Friends said that Liam had been in a dark place the past few weeks and turned to drink as he struggled with his career and other personal issues. Liam’s record label Universal also reportedly dropped the star just a few days ago. A source told The Sun exclusively: “His friends have been worried about him for weeks because he was struggling with his career and wanted to release some new music but he felt he wasn’t as good as his other bandmates, which they kept telling him just wasn’t true. He was just always so hard on himself.

“Then in recent weeks his drinking and suspected drug use started to worry his friends, they were actually planning an intervention, it was that bad.

“They were heartbroken seeing him this way – but just didn’t know how to go about staging a proper intervention.

“They’ve been worried sick about him, he’s just been in a bad place for the past few weeks. Lots of his friends had been telling him gently to get professional help or go to rehab but he just wouldn’t listen.

“The day of his death he was acting very off and erratically. One of his friends suggested to him again to him that he should get help but this just seemed to set him off more.

“Everyone is just distraught – their only comfort is that police have said he would have died instantly in the fall so he wouldn’t have suffered.”

Final moments

Dad-of-one Liam was in the Argentinian city for his bandmate Niall Horan’s concert when he died.

His girlfriend Kate Cassidy, 25, had been with him on the trip but reportedly returned home to Florida two days before his death.

Emergency services in Buenos Aires confirmed he died instantly from fatal injuries to his skull.

An autopsy stated that Liam’s severe injuries led to “internal and external haemorrhaging”.

Police said they found what appeared to be “narcotics, alcohol, destroyed objects and furniture” in his hotel room as well as over the counter and prescription drugs.

Results from a toxicology report are pending.
