A man has started to dress as the Marvel comic character Deadpool to stop motorists from speeding in the area after his cat was struck down and killed.

Mark Spaven, a 59-year-old warehouse leader from Nottinghamshire, has become so sick of drivers whizzing past his house that he’s resorted to wearing a Deadpool outfit to stop them.

Mark has been donning his costume while waving his ‘slow down please’ homemade sign on Cavendish Drive in Nottingham after his complaints to the council fell on deaf ears.

Groot, Mark’s cat, knocked over and killed by a suspected speeding driver two weeks ago on his street, leaving his wife ‘in a right state.’

But this had been a point of frustration for the Marvel fan long before his cat’s death.

He said: ‘I’m not just doing it because I’m upset about the cat, there are kids that walk around here.’

Mark said drivers divert down his road to avoid nearby traffic lights, with cars reaching speeds of 50mph in the 30mph zone.

He added he has narrowly avoided being hit three times over the last few years.

Outlining one moment, he said: ‘I was crossing to the Tesco, I look left, right, and behind. The car stopped around two feet away from my leg.

‘I don’t know whether they feel as if they have got to beat the lights or something. Taxis also wait to pick people up from Tesco so you’re having to walk in the middle of the road.

‘I recently distributed leaflets all around the community and it was surprising how many people who came out the door and said they nearly got hit. It’s only a short little drive.’

Mark has called for Nottinghamshire County Council to lower the speed limit on Cavendish Drive from 30mph to 20mph to try and rectify the problem.

Labour MP Michael Payne has supported the idea.

He said: ‘Mark’s experience shows that speeding is not a victimless act. To those speeding drivers I say: stop putting yourself and others at risk, because you will get caught and be made to face the consequences.

And a highways manager at the council added: ‘We are concerned to hear about resident’s reports of speeding on Cavendish Drive, Carlton.

‘Whilst we have not received any reports of speeding directly, we will consider installing ’30 for a reason signs’ at the location, along with temporary interactive speed signs in due course.
