Ljubljana – Serbia is pleased with the possibility that the position of EU commissioner for enlargement might be occupied by someone from Slovenia, said Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić in Ljubljana after a meeting with his Slovenian colleague Tanja Fajon. According to him, Slovenia has an in-depth understanding of the region and has long supported Serbia on its European path. The Serbian minister was also received by Prime Minister Robert Golob.

The foreign ministers agreed on the importance and weight of the enlargement portfolio, while they did not specifically discuss the candidate Marta Kos.

According to Đurić, it is known in Belgrade that EU enlargement is in Slovenia’s interest, also because Slovenia has long supported Serbia on its European integration path. He added that Serbia is expected to be institutionally ready to join the union by 2027.

The ministers also confirmed the good relations between the countries and their good and diverse cooperation. “History has shown that we have always been able to overcome any disagreements and that our friendly relations have a solid foundation,” said Fajon.

The head of Serbian diplomacy was also received by the President of the National Assembly Urška Klakočar Zupančič and Prime Minister Robert Golob. Đurić and Golob also discussed the enhancement of bilateral relations and the European perspective of Serbia and the entire Western Balkans, the Slovenian government wrote on the X network.

Although economic and trade relations between the countries are good, extensive, and intensive, political and diplomatic relations have been somewhat cooled recently.

In April, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s comment about disgusting Slovenians in the UN Security Council caused a stir in Slovenia. Moreover, the issue of appointing an ambassador of Serbia in Ljubljana remains open after Slovenia refused to issue an agrément to candidate Zoran Đorđević last November due to alleged concerns in the security and intelligence circles.
