At least 17 students were killed and 13 others seriously injured after a fire broke out Thursday night at a school in central Kenya, according to local police reports on Friday, September 6, via Xinhua.

National Police Service Spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed that 14 students were hospitalized with severe burns after their dormitories at Hillside Endarasha Primary Academy in Nyeri County caught fire, with one succumbing to injuries while in the hospital.

“We are investigating the cause of the fire and taking the necessary steps,” Onyango stated over the phone. “At this point, we have 17 students confirmed dead.”

Witnesses reported that one dormitory housing the students was destroyed, raising concerns that the death toll from the tragic fire could increase.

Rescue teams are on-site, working to control the situation, according to local police.

The cause of the fire at Hillside Endarasha Primary remains unknown, and an investigation is underway.

Kenyan President William Ruto described the news as “devastating” and called for a thorough investigation into the incident.

“We pray for a swift recovery for the survivors,” Ruto posted on social media. “I have instructed the relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into this tragic event. Those responsible will be held accountable. The government, through the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government, is mobilizing resources to support the affected families.”
