A former Hollywood actor jailed for attacking his ex-girlfriend was re-arrested the next day on suspicion of assault.

Jason Hoganson, 53, gave a thumbs up as he walked out of HMP Durham on September 10, three weeks into an 18-month sentence for attacking his ex.

A day later, Mr Hoganson was back in police custody, suspected of assault and two counts of breaching a restraining order.

Mr Hoganson, who played a leading role in 1980s cult classic Empire State, denied the assault when he appeared at court.

He admitted one count of breaching the restraining order but denied the other.

The 53-year-old remains in custody, with his due to begin on October 30.

Having served most of his 18-month sentence on remand, Mr Hoganson was automatically released at the halfway mark.

This came on the same day as 1,750 prisoners were released early as part of an emergency plan to free up prison beds.

Britain’s prison population reached record highs of more than 88,500 by the start of September, meaning nearly all jails were at capacity.

Offenders serving sentences of fewer than five years were released on licence after having spent 40% of their term in jail, rather than the usual 50%.

Sex offenders and domestic abusers, along with violent offenders with a minimum four-year term were excluded from the scheme.
