Incoming Liverpool signing Giorgi Mamardashvili does not intend to except a role as back-up goalkeeper, instead push Alisson Becker hard for the gloves.

The Reds agreed a deal to sign the Georgian keeper this summer but he has returned to Valencia for a season-long loan, eventually moving to Merseyside next year.

The 6’6″ colossus has been at Valencia since 2021 and made over 100 appearances for the Spanish club, while he shone for his country at Euro 2024 over the summer.

He will come to Anfield with impressive pedigree and sounds like he will not be thrilled with sitting on the bench for too long.

Alisson has been a mainstay in goal for Liverpool since arriving from Roma in 2018 and remains one of the finest goalkeepers in the world, with a contract at the club until 2027.

Mamardashvili is setting his stall out, though, saying whether Alisson is there or not when he walks through the doors, he will be bidding to be first choice.

‘I was attracted by the Liverpool project when the club’s representatives met with me to sign me,’ the goalkeeper told First Channel, via ElDesmarque.

‘I will fight for the starting goalkeeper position, even if the current goalkeeper does not leave the team.’

Alisson is currently out injured with a thigh problem, with Vitezslav Jaros replacing the Brazilian against Crystal Palace last time out, while Caoimhin Kelleher was unwell. The Irishman is expected to play against Chelsea on Sunday, though.

The Georgian is going through something of a nightmare start to the season with Valencia, with the club sitting 18th in La Liga after nine games.

He has kept three clean sheets in his last four games, so it is not all bad on his front, but he is already talking about fighting relegation this season.

‘I am fully focused, 100 percent, on helping my team keep its place in La Liga. I will work hard for that,’ he said.

‘We have not been lucky with the schedule at the start of the season. We have had to play against big teams like Barcelona, Atlético and Athletic. Now there are matches coming up in which we can take points. We look to the future with hope.’

Mamardashvili was one of just two Liverpool signings over the transfer window, with Federico Chiesa also arriving from Juventus.

It has been a very good start to life under Arne Slot despite the lack of new blood, with the Reds top of the Premier League table.

Speaking as the transfer window came to a close, Slot said: ‘We’re happy with the ones we’ve signed because it is a strong team so if we find players we’re happy.

‘Chiesa can help for the short term and Mamardashvili is I think an example of what this club does in the past looking at the future of the club.’
