Manchester United have moved to deny claims that the club had an agreement with newly-appointed England boss Thomas Tuchel.

The German was appointed as Gareth Southgate’s successor on Wednesday, becoming the third non-British head coach of the national side.

It ends speculation that Tuchel will replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, having been heavily linked with a move to the club.

Tuchel was interviewed by United last summer and was a leading contender to replace the Dutchman.

However, United eventually decided to give Ten Hag a new one-year deal and reshaped his backroom staff.

Nevertheless, after the club’s worst ever start to a Premier League season, United executives held a meeting at the start of last week in which Ten Hag’s position was discussed.

Tuchel was the new favourite to replace Ten Hag and there were reports that the German had verbally agreed to take over from the Dutchman.

But the Manchester Evening News say United have denied these claims and had no intention of appointing Tuchel.

Ten Hag is expected to be in charge for Saturday’s match against Brentford at Old Trafford.

Anything but a win will pile the pressure on the former Ajax boss, even if United’s board are desperate to stick by him.
