A respected analyst appears to have revealed the name of Nintendo’s next console, and it seems the company has learnt from the Wii U.

Unlike PlayStation, Nintendo has largely avoided numbered consoles over the generations, with the closest being the jump from the Nintendo DS to the 3DS.

The company has re-used naming conventions for consoles though, as shown by the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) from the NES, and the jump from the Wii to the Wii U. The name of the latter, however, is partly why that console was a financial flop.

The overwhelming success of the Nintendo Switch has led many to wonder whether the company’s next console will maintain the Switch name, or deviate entirely, but it seems Nintendo is planning on playing it safe.

Dr Serkan Toto, CEO of a Japanese game industry consultancy and an analyst, posted a tweet on Wednesday where he appeared to out the final name of the console, simply writing: ‘Switch 2.’

While this would be shrugged off if posted by anyone else, the same source has made claims about the next Nintendo console in the past. In January, he claimed the console will launch at $400 (£400), with games being priced at $70 (£70). Most current Switch games cost £50, although Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom was an exception at £60.

As such, the replies have taken this tweet to mean it is the final name of the console, with some mourning the potential loss of alternatives like ‘Super Nintendo Switch’.

While Nintendo hasn’t typically gone for numbered consoles in the past, it is perhaps the obvious choice for the Switch successor. Many fans have already dubbed it the Switch 2, and unlike the Wii U debacle, it does clearly signal to general consumers that it is a new console.

Toto’s track record isn’t entirely solid though. He previously claimed Mario Kart 9 could be revealed back in 2022, which didn’t happen, but Nintendo did announce DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Last year, he also deleted a tweet suggesting a Zelda remake of sorts was set to be revealed in 2023, which didn’t materialise.

Nintendo hasn’t revealed anything about its next console, only that it will be shown sometime before April 2025. Some insiders claim it will be announced before the end of this year, with some particularly banking on October.

As shown with the recent announcement of Alarmo though, Nintendo is very difficult to predict, but with only so many months left, it shouldn’t be long before Nintendo does finally pull the trigger.
