  • Tom Holland said that the "Spider-Man 4" script "needs work."
  • The actor told the "Rich Roll" podcast that he read a draft of the story with Zendaya.
  • Earlier Spider-Man films have been billion-dollar hits, so expectations are high.

Tom Holland, the star of "Spider-Man 4," has some reservations about the movie so far.

In a recent interview he said a draft script he read "needs work" before Marvel Studios and Sony can start filming.

Holland made the comment on an episode of the "Rich Roll" podcast released Thursday.

In the same breath, he said it was an "exciting" project that fired him up — but it was an unusual amount of hesitation for the star of a major feature.

Holland said: "It needs work, but the writers are doing a great job. I read it three weeks ago, and it really lit a fire in me. Zendaya and I sat down and read it together, and we at times were bouncing around the living room like, 'This is a real movie worthy of the fans' respect.' But there's a few things we need to figure out before we can get that really going, but it's exciting."

It's not uncommon for actors to be realistic about the status of their upcoming projects, but many don't offer specific criticism while doing so.

The previous movie, "Spider-Man: No Way Home," earned $1.9 billion according to Box Office Mojo, setting big expectations for its sequel.

Part of the draw was previous stars Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returning to play their respective versions of Peter Parker alongside Holland.

There is no official word so far on where "Spider-Man 4" may take its plot to rival that spectacle.

Holland also told the podcast that the project was beholden to the extra constraints of needing to gel with the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"One of the things to bear in mind with Marvel is that your film is a small cog in a large machine," he said. "And that machine has got to keep running. And you need to make sure you can fit into that timeline at the right time to benefit the bigger picture.

"That's one of the challenges we're facing. The time in which we need to get that done is a tall order but definitely achievable with the fantastic people we have working on it now."
