BRUSSELS – The Croatian representative in the new European Commission Dubravka Šuica will be responsible for the Mediterranean and for demography, and will have a new Directorate-General under her that will be formed for the Mediterranean region.

President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced her new team of commissioners in Strasbourg on Tuesday and sent letters to each of them describing their responsibilities.

“I would like to entrust you with the role of Commissioner for the Mediterranean. You will also be responsible for demography,” states the letter from Ursula von der Leyen to Dubravka Šuica.

The letter also mentions that a new Directorate-General for the Mediterranean will be formed in the Commission to support Šuica in her work.

The Commission is divided into departments, or directorates-general (DGs), responsible for different policy areas. However, the number of directorates-general is significantly smaller than the number of commissioners, and some of them do not oversee any. Directorates-general are similar to ministries in national state governments, led by chief directors, EU civil servants who report directly to the commissioner responsible for the policy area covered by their directorate-general. The directorates-general also have their own budget.

In her work, Šuica will collaborate most closely with the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. Šuica will be responsible for working on the new Mediterranean pact.

“I want you to be present in the region and consult with partners on how best to address common challenges, invest in a shared future, and contribute to common prosperity and security,” says the letter addressed to Šuica.

Her new job description also includes strengthening trade and encouraging investment in the region. Šuica is also tasked with working together with the Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen to create the Trans-Mediterranean Cooperation Initiative in energy and clean technologies to increase trade in renewable energy and encourage the production of clean technologies.
