TV shows are sometimes a great way to get a feel for foreign towns and cities. Others seem to revel in the seedy underbelly of their locations, providing a glimpse of something terrifying. Definitely not the sort of thing to inspire your travel plans.
Although excellent entertainment, each of the TV shows and movies listed below depict the very worst of their locations. You have been warned.
Seattle – The Killing
A remake of the Danish original, Forbrydelsen, The Killing is a compelling detective drama set in Seattle, Washington. It follows detective Sarah Linden and her mis-matched partner, Holder as they investigate the murder of a teenage girl.
The show is excellent, particularly season 3, but it’s a terrible advertisement for the city of Seattle. Not only does it rain constantly, but Seattle appears plagued by homelessness, drugs, prostitution and child murder.
The Killing is currently free to watch for UK viewers via the More 4 app (or for international users with a VPN subscription).
Paris – Engrenages (Spiral)
Over the course of eight seasons, we follow Laure Berthaud and her team of rule-breakers as they investigate several brutal killings in Paris. We get to see both police and courts in action – think Law & Order but a lot more gritty, grimy and realistic.
Emily in Paris this is not. Spiral depicts the ‘real’ Paris situated just beyond the famous tourist sights. Unafraid to delve into the tensions that exist in Parisian housing estates, this show is a tour de force. And a terrible advertisement for Paris.
Kraków – Schindler’s List
It’s about the Holocaust. Enough said.
However, it is based on a true story and everyone should see Schindler’s List at least once.
Schindler’s List is available to stream via Netflix until September 30th 2024.
Edinburgh – Trainspotting
This classic 1990s Britflick follows a group of heroin addicts and assorted lunatics through their everyday lives. The second half becomes something of a caper, but the start is shocking, harrowing, grim and also darkly comic. Featuring ‘The Worst Toilet in Scotland’, this film will definitely deter you from visiting an Edinburgh pub.
Adapted from the book of the same name Trainspotting was largely filmed in Glasgow, although set in Edinburgh. In a way, that makes this movie a terrible advertisement for both Scottish cities.
New York – Sully
An incredible true story about ‘The Miracle on the Hudson’. Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger achieves the impossible and lands a passenger jet on the River Hudson in New York after his plane malfunctions. Against the odds, all crew and passengers survive.
The actual crash only accounts for part of the film. The majority of the runtime depicts the accident investigation which questioned Sully’s decision to land on a river rather than attempt an even-more-impossible diversion to one of New York’s airports. However, the crash sequence may make you question whether you ever want to board another plane.
Sully is available to watch free for Amazon Prime subscribers.
Antarctica – The Thing
Obviously, Antarctica is not a city, but as a continent with a population the size of a very small town, it may as well be. Pristine white snow, spectacular scenery and ramshackle polar research stations. The Thing has them all – and much, much worse.
One of the greatest horror movies of all time, The Thing captures the isolation, paranoia and fear of living far from civilisation – and the awful potential of the unknown. After watching this film you will never want to roll around in the snow again.
To be fair, these are all great TV shows and movies even if they do depict the worst cities on Earth. But they certainly will not inspire your next city break.
