Thriving in Publishing Through the Flexibility of a Home-Based Business --[Reported by Umva mag]

Home Business Magazine Online

The pandemic made home-based businesses more common than ever, but I’ve been running Creative Minds Publications, an award-winning publishing company, from my home for more than a decade. Since creativity, strong writing skills, and marketing strategies are some of the most essential factors in my business, I knew that the flexibility of a home-based business would be the best thing for me.  Prior to starting my business, I was an inner-city elementary school teacher and reading specialist. My company has allowed me to use my expertise in literacy education by leading the literacy consulting arm of my publishing company.

A Work from Home Schedule

When I’m not in a school providing job-embedded literacy consulting, I’m working from home working from home. Every single day is different but is based around reading, writing, and teaching. Responsibilities include editing, collaborating with designers, meeting with new authors, creative marketing, planning book events, and our varied publicity efforts. One of our most important roles is to market and highlight the incredible authors and books we have the honor of publishing. To stay in the business, we must market our home-based business as well. It should come as no surprise that a lot of our marketing includes writing guest blog posts and articles. We use social media to connect with new readers and teachers, but I find that direct email marketing with your loyal friends, fans, and followers is even more important.

When I was teaching second grade full-time, I wrote my very first children’s book, Amy’s Travels to teach the seven continents based on the true story of my friend Amy. To publish, market, and sell it, I invested $5,000 of my own money and founded Creative Minds Publications. I spent my evenings and weekends building my company to what it is today.

The Future of the Business

Our primary customers include future authors and elementary schools, and we continue to expand our network. So far, we have published thirteen books written by debut authors and are thrilled to have an inbox full of new submissions. We have helped over 200 elementary schools around the country increase reading and writing success and have a lot more work to do to teach the world to read.  We also created the 9th annual philanthropic Tackle Reading gift supported by the National Football League to promote a love of literacy with a passion for football.

I am confident that in three years, we will have added even more authors and books to our imprint. I am excited to help even more parents, teachers, schools, nonprofits, and corporations achieve literacy success around the country. I believe that anyone who is disciplined, organized, and productive can create a successful work from home business success story too.
