The Football Association are keen on hiring Pep Guardiola as England’s next manager but have one major fear over appointing the Manchester City boss.

Guardiola was approached by the FA last summer, following Gareth Southgate’s resignation.

Lee Carsley, who was named interim manager in September, has intimated he does not want the job on a permanent basis.

The former England U21 boss is therefore set to step down after the November international break.

That has, naturally, accelerated the FA’s search for a long-term successor for Southgate.

Guardiola is out of contract at City at the end of the season, and is yet to make a decision on whether to extend his eight-and-a-half-year stay at the Etihad.

The club expect Guardiola to make a decision by the end of January but he has no plans on leaving the Etihad before his contract expires.

That means the FA will have to wait until the summer should they get their man.

But the Daily Mail say the FA are concerned by the 115 charges hanging over City by the Premier League.

The outcome of City’s case is expected to come out by the end of 2024 but the FA fear Guardiola could be implicated.

The FA have been stung in the past, such as the appointment of Sam Allardyce in 2016 when the former Blackburn manager was forced to resign after just one match in charge.

Nevertheless, the FA view Guardiola as a ‘dream’ hire and are prepared to make him the best-paid international manager in the world.
