A horror crash which killed five people, including two children, was caused by a car driving the wrong way down the M6 in Cumbria.

Police said they received reports a Skoda was travelling southbound on the northbound carriageway past Tebay servives on the M6 yesterday.

It then collided with a Toyota, killing a 42-year-old man, 33-year-old woman and two boys aged 15 and seven who were travelling in the car.

A third child aged seven travelling in the Toyota was rushed to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious injuries.

The driver of the Skoda, a man from Cambridgeshire, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Cumbria Constabulary said: ‘The families of those involved are being supported by specially trained officers.’

The force is now appealing for information.

Footage shows smoke rising from the crash scene between junctions J36 and J39.

Motorists reported seeing an air ambulance land on the carriageway after traffic was stopped on the carriageway.

Weather at the time of the collision was overcast and footage appears to show fog on a nearby field.

The crash happened just hours before a yellow weather warning was forecast to bring heavy rain to parts of the North West.
