She was a superstar, nothing fazed her. Kayleigh was an amazing little girl who always smiled no matter what she was going through. “Kayleigh’s favourite toy was her pink bunny – it was with her always. Her favourite colours were pink and blue. “She was a sassy little princess who loved playing with her big sister Billie. No matter what she was going through she wouldn’t like to dampen spirits, she was the soul of the party.” Heartbroken mum Deborah Kavanagh was first informed her baby had a large tumour on the back of her neck at their 20-week scan. The large teratoma, a rare type of tumour, was pressing on Kayleigh’s food pipe, and causing increased fluid in the womb. Deborah was referred to the Fetal Medicine Unit at Saint Mary’s Hospital, who were able to provide specialist care. A team of 34 incredible specialists then performed an emergency life-saving surgery. Kayleigh was born eight weeks early via an EXIT procedure and a tracheostomy was put in, after professionals diagnosed the teratoma would block her airway during birth. It was only the third time in the hospitals’ history that an Ex Utero Intrapartum Treatment (EXIT) had been carried out. When little Kayleigh was just 10 days old she underwent more surgery to debulk the teratoma, but lost so much blood her heart stopped. The operation was halted, and another one was attempted when she reached 18-months-old. This procedure was successful, and the tumour was tested as benign, meaning non cancerous. However, tragedy stuck the family again in February 2023 when Kayleigh was diagnosed with a cancerous germ cell tumour. The brave and determined youngster completed chemotherapy at Birmingham and Stoke from March to June but sadly relapsed a month later. Friends and family told how the inspirational youngster continued to smile and laugh no matter what she went through. She then incredibly battled through another round of chemotherapy in Birmingham from September until January this year. Again, Kayleigh sadly relapsed around six weeks later. The remarkable little girl then tried Proton Beam Radiotherapy at the Christie’s in Manchester from April to May, which lasted for six weeks. Unfortunately by July, Kayleigh had been diagnosed with a metastasized germ cell tumour in her lungs. She was given a low dose of chemotherapy for palliative care in August, before tragically passing away in September. A funeral was held for Kayleigh at Carmountside Crematorium yesterday. A fundraiser has been set up by family and friends to buy a plaque and memorial bench. They will proudly be displayed in her memory at Co-Op Academy Clarice Cliff Primary School, where Kayleigh’s older sister, Bille, goes. GoFundMe organiser Samantha said: “Our aim is to place a memorial bench and plaque in Billie’s school where, if all went well, Kayleigh would have been attending. “Any other funds would be going straight to the family.” BPMMum Deborah Kavanagh was told her baby has a large teratoma at her 20 week scan[/caption] BPMKayleigh with her dad William Deaville[/caption] SWNSKayleigh Deaville after surgery to remove more of the teratoma[/caption] BPMKayleigh passed away on September 12[/caption]
