Or rather... teal.

Whether you’re craving a cheeseburger or fries – McDonald’s golden arches act like the bat signal for anyone in need of a quick bite

But fast food lovers might be in for a surprise in one America state, where the famous sign isn’t quite what you’d expect. Instead of being the iconic gold (aka yellow) – they’re actually blue.

Located in Arizona, the Sedona store – off State Route 89A – isn’t the only McDonald’s without the classic yellow sign, but this change serves a purpose.

In 1993 – just a few years after Sedona was incorporated into the state in 1989 – McDonald’s wanted to open a restaurant in the city.

The city is famous for its stunning red rock landscape, steep canyons and pine forests, and the Department of Community Development wanted to preserve its natural beauty.

‘Someone suggested it would be interesting if they did something else than golden arches to fit in with the identity that the city was trying to establish, Cari Meyer, from the Department of Community Development for the City of Sedona, told local news channel abc15 in 2022.

The city government felt the traditional yellow sign would be too distracting from the natural landscape. Instead, they suggested switching the colour to teal, and lowering the sign so it wouldn’t stand out.

McDonald’s complied, and the sign remains the only blue-golden arches in the world today.

True to tradition, however, once you enter the restaurant, the interior and menu are the same as any other McDonald’s in the US.

The store has become quite the tourist attraction due to its unique coloured arches, with many visitors stopping to take pictures with the sign as they pass through Sedona.

The burger joint has over 200 reviews on Tripadvisor, with one traveller, ‘budzy829, saying she felt like a ‘kid again’ after visiting.

She wrote: ‘Never had I felt so excited to grab a cheeseburger combo until I saw this.’

Another reviewer called ‘Hongkon’ wrote: ‘Blending beautifully in the architecture of Sedona, this super clean McDonald’s is the best one I have ever seen. Not a fan of fast food.

‘This McDonald’s, however, I would return to for its nice design, cleanliness and location.’

The Sedona store isn’t the only McDonald’s location with a unique design. A few others have strayed from the traditional coloured arches.

In both Paris, on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, and in Bruges, Belgium, the cities boast a McDonald’s with white arches.

Meanwhile, in California, two stores opt for a different colour scheme. In Rocklin, on Sunset Boulevard, you can find one with red arches and in Monterey, you’ll discover black arches.

Plenty of other restaurants boast unique features too. One McDonald’s in Budapest transforms into a club every Friday and Saturday, with live DJ sets from 10pm to 4 am.

While a location in Italy doubles as an archaeological museum and has human remains on display. The ‘morbid’ display is in Frattocchie, just a 45-minute drive from Rome, and features a glass floor over an ancient Roman road.
