A clash unfolded in Evanston, Illinois, as Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino confronted Mayor Daniel Bliss over recent detentions of individuals potentially in the country illegally. The confrontation began when Bliss approached Bovino, voicing strong objections to the Border Patrol’s actions. He accused the agency of “abuse,” “racism,” and “violence,” carefully positioning reporters to witness his public condemnation.
Bovino responded directly, stating the Border Patrol’s presence was a direct response to concerns within the community. He emphasized their role in addressing violent situations and ensuring the safety of residents, questioning why the mayor appeared unaware of the issues unfolding in his own city.
“That’s why we’re here,” Bovino stated, “to hear what you need us to do when we are dealing with a violent situation…where there should be no violence committed by those who shouldn’t be here.” When Bliss claimed ignorance of such violence, Bovino sharply retorted, “Well, that’s probably the problem. Maybe you should get aware.”
Hours later, Bovino amplified the message with a significant announcement regarding an operation at O’Hare Airport. “Operation Midway Blitz” resulted in the apprehension of sixteen individuals allegedly working as rideshare drivers while in the country illegally.
Bovino publicly shared the news, stating that those circumventing immigration laws would not be allowed to hide within the “gig economy.” He framed the operation as a necessary step to uphold the law and ensure accountability.
