A young Texas police officer, just 27 years old, made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty while pursuing a dangerous fugitive. Officer Elijah Garretson, originally from New Hampshire, was fatally shot during an attempted arrest in Copperas Cove on January 10th, a stark reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement every day.
The fugitive, 26-year-old Jamison Cavazos, was wanted for serious offenses including organized criminal activity and failing to appear in court. As Garretson and two other officers moved to apprehend Cavazos, a violent struggle erupted, escalating into a deadly confrontation.
During the struggle, Cavazos fired the shot that would claim Garretson’s life. He then fled, leading officers on a desperate pursuit to a second location. After a prolonged negotiation attempt, Cavazos ultimately took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Authorities recovered two pistols from Cavazos, painting a picture of a man prepared for a violent clash. Officer Garretson was immediately transported to a hospital, but despite the best efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries.
Before dedicating his life to protecting others, Garretson served with distinction in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Hood. He rose through the ranks to become a Sergeant before honorably leaving the service in June 2024.
Garretson’s commitment to service didn’t end with his military career. He excelled at the police academy, graduating as the Academic Honor Graduate in June 2025. His bravery was already evident, having previously saved the life of a fellow cadet who suffered a cardiac arrest.
The loss is particularly devastating as Garretson leaves behind a wife and a young 5-year-old daughter. The Copperas Cove community, and the wider law enforcement family, are grappling with the profound grief of his passing.
Investigations into the tragic events are being led by the Texas Rangers, seeking to understand the full circumstances surrounding Officer Garretson’s death. His sacrifice will not be forgotten, a testament to the courage and dedication of those who protect and serve.
