The sky over Tehran witnessed a historic clash. The Israel Defense Forces released footage depicting the moment an Israeli F-35I “Adir” stealth fighter achieved a first – the downing of an Iranian Yak-130 fighter jet in combat. The event marks a significant milestone in the operational history of the advanced aircraft.
Within the released video, a calm, resolute voice cuts through the tension: “Completed. Target down. The target is down.” Remarkably, the moment is underscored by the iconic theme music from “Star Wars,” adding an almost surreal quality to the confirmation of the successful intercept.
Israeli military officials hailed the shootdown as a pivotal moment for their F-35 fleet. The accomplishment demonstrates the aircraft’s capabilities and solidifies its role as a cornerstone of Israel’s air defense strategy.
Major General Tomer Bar, commander of the Israeli air force, directly addressed the pilots involved in Operation Roaring Lion. His message was one of profound praise, acknowledging their skill and determination in achieving this historic feat.
The F-35I “Adir” is not simply a copy of the American F-35 Lightning II; it’s a uniquely customized version tailored to Israel’s specific operational needs. Israel was the first nation to commit to the aircraft through a U.S. Foreign Military Sales agreement back in 2010, receiving its first jet in 2016.
The Hebrew name “Adir,” meaning “Mighty One,” was deliberately chosen to reflect the aircraft’s power and significance within the Israeli Air Force. It represents a substantial leap forward in their aerial capabilities.
In stark contrast to the advanced F-35I, the downed Yak-130 is a Russian-made, two-seat combat training aircraft. Designed by the Yakovlev Design Bureau, it has been in production since its first flight in 1996.
Iran only recently added the Yak-130 to its air force, receiving its first aircraft in September 2023. This acquisition was part of a larger initiative to modernize Iran’s aging fleet of military aircraft.
Plans for further modernization were already underway before the incident. In November 2023, Iranian officials announced finalized agreements for the acquisition of Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets, Mil Mi-28 attack helicopters, and additional Yak-130 trainers.
This pursuit of modern aircraft builds upon Iran’s previous acquisitions, including MiG-29 fighter jets obtained from Russia during the 1990s. The recent events highlight the ongoing efforts to bolster Iran’s air defense capabilities.
