Aliyah Henderson, 28, has been charged with aggravated murder in connection with the deaths of Mila Chatman, 8, and her half-sister, Amor Wilson, 10. The identification of the girls was confirmed through painstaking DNA analysis, bringing a heartbreaking clarity to the investigation.
The grim find began Monday evening when a man walking his dog stumbled upon a partially buried suitcase in a field near East 162nd Street. His call to police initiated a search that quickly escalated into a nightmare scenario.
Officers unearthed a shallow grave containing one suitcase and a deceased individual. A subsequent, thorough search of the area led to the discovery of a second grave, and another suitcase holding the remains of a second child.
The girls’ father, DeShaun Chatman, received the devastating news late Wednesday. He revealed a five-year struggle to gain custody of Mila, a battle marked by repeated attempts to secure emergency custody orders.
Chatman hadn’t seen Mila since she was just three years old, in 2020. His desperate attempts to locate her through child welfare agencies were thwarted by a lack of information regarding her current whereabouts, leaving him feeling helpless and lost.
“It’s very much horrible,” Chatman stated, his voice heavy with grief. He described Mila as a vibrant, joyful child, a little princess who adored the color pink and radiated happiness. “She was always happy. She was a kid’s kid.”
Henderson was detained by law enforcement officials on Wednesday evening. During a search of a residence linked to her, authorities found another child, thankfully appearing to be in good health. That child is now under the care of the Department of Children and Family Services.
