Canceling Cold War Thriller 'Untitled Emilia Clarke Project' a Misstep, Critics Say Despite Near-Universal Praise

Canceling Cold War Thriller 'Untitled Emilia Clarke Project' a Misstep, Critics Say Despite Near-Universal Praise

The cancellation of Peacock's spy thriller Ponies has left fans disappointed and frustrated. The eight-episode series, set in Soviet Russia during the height of the Cold War, follows two secretaries, Twila and Bea, as they are initiated as CIA operatives after the mysterious death of their husbands.

The show boasts a gritty-enough plot, electric chemistry between lead actresses Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson, and a meaty cliffhanger that will now never get resolution. The first series set up layered protagonists, a layered plot, and an untapped queer storyline, all of which are a breath of fresh air in the television landscape.

Co-creator David Iserson mourned the premature ending of the show, calling it 'for now,' and praised the seven-year journey it took to get it to the small screen. He encouraged fans to watch the show anyway, dubbing it 'not like anything else on television.'

Haley Lu Richardson also gave the show a sweet nod by sharing doughnuts with the words 'Ponies', '4EVA', and 'Twila' piped on them. The first series of Ponies was not perfect, but it was brimming with potential, and there's no doubt that it was, especially with its unconventional tone.

Ponies easily secured an impressive 94% Rotten Tomatoes critics' score, labelled an 'unexpected treat', 'lots of fun', and 'absolutely thrilling'. The show boasted brilliant lead chemistry and an intriguing tone, with a standout ensemble cast that populate this rich world.

Despite the cancellation, fans are not giving up on the show. Many are calling for another streaming service to pick it up, citing the untapped potential of the series. They argue that the show's incredible performances, backdrop, writing, and music make it a true gem that deserves a second chance.
