President Donald Trump has sarcastically congratulated New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for helping elect three Communists in the state's Democrat primaries on Tuesday.
The Communists, Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier, all won their races after endorsements from Mamdani.
In a post to a social media platform on Wednesday, Trump wrote: "Mayor Mamdani pulled through 3 solid Communists, and has received loud and universal applause from the Fake News Media. Congratulations Mr. Mayor!"
Lander is a former NYC Comptroller who defeated incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman in the primary.
In his victory speech, Lander declared, "Solidarity is the force that we need to vanquish Trump's fascism, to abolish ICE, and to stand up to the billionaires who are rigging our economy against us!"
Valdez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso in a primary to replace retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez.
Chevalier, who is also a DSA member, defeated incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat.
She was recruited to run by a progressive group that backed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and has been described as "like AOC, but to the left."
Chevalier's platform includes affordable housing, abolishing ICE, and universal healthcare.
She previously called the American flag "violent excrement."
Mamdani has not issued a public response to Trump's specific "3 solid Communists" comment as of the latest reports.
