Kerry Coombes, 33, lost her life in a collision with a train in Hoghton, Lancashire, at 8:50 a.m. on Thursday.
The social worker was pronounced dead at the scene after the train struck her car and pushed it more than 100 yards along the tracks, according to witnesses.
Family members described her as compassionate and self‑less, saying she consistently placed others before herself and brought love, laughter, and kindness to those around her.
Jacqui Old, executive director of Education and Children’s Services at Lancashire County Council, noted that Coombes demonstrated professionalism and a strong commitment to her work, making a tangible difference in many lives.
Old added that Coomes was a valued team member whose loss will be deeply felt by colleagues and the broader community.
The British Transport Police have opened a criminal investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Attwell called the incident shocking and tragic, confirming that specialist officers will continue to support Coombes’s family and friends.
He urged the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation proceeds, promising further updates as they become available.
