Arsenal Defender William Saliba Opens Up About Past Transfer Disagreement

William Saliba, a talented French footballer, has made a significant impact on the World Cup stage, showcasing his skills and dedication to the sport. His journey, however, has been marked by twists and turns, from loan spells to high-stakes decisions about his future.

After spending six months at Nice, Saliba's next move was influenced by Arsenal's hierarchy, who sought to prepare him for the English game through a loan to a Premier League rival. However, Saliba had other plans, opting for a year-long stint at Marseille instead. He recalled, "Arsenal wanted me to go to Newcastle United or Crystal Palace, but I didn’t want to [do that]."

Saliba's loan at Marseille proved to be a pivotal moment in his career, as he impressed with his performances and eventually re-signed with Arsenal. He reflected on the experience, saying, "I remember that summer, it was either Lille OSC or Marseille. I was on the verge of joining Lille but there was a financial problem. It was this financial problem that led him to OM. But Saliba admits that there was initially some reticence."

Marseille's Commanderie, the club's training ground, was a daunting prospect for Saliba, but he persevered, driven by his agent's advice to seize the opportunity. He explained, "But, with my agent, we said: ‘Marseille, if you go there and have a good season, it is the team in France and things can move quickly. Jorge Sampaoli really wanted me. I went to Marseille and things moved so quickly. I played almost all of the matches. My value rose again. I started having fun again."

The experience at Marseille had a profound impact on Saliba, as he credits the club and its supporters with helping him regain his confidence and passion for the game. He reflected, "By March, I was playing my first matches for France. It was an incredible year. I honestly loved Marseille: the supporters, the club, my teammates… football is like that. You build again from the bottom; it’s not a problem. Buckle up. If you do things well, you’ll get back to the top."
