UMVA has learned that even the most seasoned drivers can struggle with the modern driving test, as evidenced by Top Gear star James May's recent experience.
James May, a veteran driver whose entire professional career has centered around driving, decided to take the current driving test for a spin, despite already having secured his driving license in the more relaxed 80s. He strapped in with an examiner and put his foot down on the accelerator, but unfortunately, didn't quite make the cut.
In a candid video on his YouTube channel, James May explained that he hadn't revised for the test or learned anything about it, and was simply going to "do it and see if I can pass." A rookie error, perhaps, but one that made for an entertaining and relatable viewing experience.
James May's downfall came in the form of speeding not once, but twice - once at 46mph in a 40mph zone and again at 33mph in a 30mph zone. While he quickly acknowledged his mistake, it wasn't enough to save him from a failing grade.
The examiner's verdict was clear: "I'd love to say well done, but you did have a couple of driving faults, but serious faults. That is a fail, astonishingly." It's a sobering reminder that even the most experienced drivers can fall foul of the modern driving test.
Interestingly, James May's TV driving exploits, often filled with daring stunts and wince-inducing maneuvers, are hardly the practice needed to pass a sensible, safe-as-can-be driving test. Fans were quick to point out the irony that the affectionately dubbed "Captain Slow" was called out for speeding.
James May isn't alone in his struggles, however. His Top Gear co-stars Richard and Jeremy have also failed their driving tests in the past, with Richard even being pitted against his daughter Izzy in a do-over driving test. Perhaps there's a lesson to be learned here: even the most seasoned drivers can benefit from a little practice and humility.
