A wave of aerial attacks surged across the Gulf states over the past 24 hours, as Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones in a dramatic escalation of regional tensions. The barrage followed recent strikes targeting Iranian interests, igniting a volatile response that tested the defenses of multiple nations.
Bahrain reported its air defenses successfully intercepted a significant assault, neutralizing 70 missiles and 59 drones aimed at the kingdom. Simultaneously, Qatar announced the interception of two Iranian Su-24 fighter aircraft, alongside seven ballistic missiles and five drones, demonstrating a swift and decisive response.
The United Arab Emirates bore the brunt of the assault, reporting the interception of nine ballistic missiles, six cruise missiles, and a staggering 148 drones. Over 170 ballistic missiles were detected heading towards the UAE, with 161 destroyed mid-flight and only 13 impacting the sea.
Beyond missiles, the UAE detected an immense swarm of 689 Iranian drones, managing to intercept 645 of them. However, 44 drones penetrated defenses and landed within the country’s borders, raising concerns about potential damage and disruption. In a clear signal of escalating diplomatic strain, the UAE had already announced the closure of its embassy in Tehran and the withdrawal of its diplomatic staff.
Kuwait’s air defenses proved equally vigilant, intercepting and destroying 97 ballistic missiles and an astonishing 283 drones. The sheer volume of projectiles underscored the scale and intensity of Iran’s retaliatory operation, stretching regional defense capabilities to their limits.
The attacks weren’t limited to population centers; Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy reported intercepting two drones near the critical Ras Tanura oil refinery. While the intercepted drones caused only minor damage from falling debris, the incident highlighted the vulnerability of vital infrastructure.
In a unified display of resolve, the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, and the United States issued a joint statement condemning Iran’s “indiscriminate and reckless” attacks. The statement emphasized the danger posed to civilians and the violation of multiple nations’ sovereignty.
The joint statement underscored the targeting of non-hostile nations as a particularly destabilizing act, reaffirming the collective right to self-defense. The nations lauded the effective air and missile defense cooperation that had, crucially, prevented a far greater catastrophe.
Jordan also played a key role in the defensive efforts, intercepting 49 Iranian projectiles, including 13 ballistic missiles, on Saturday. The coordinated response across the region demonstrated a shared commitment to security and a unified front against escalating aggression.
