FORD'S MEGA-PROJECT REVEALED: Prepare to be AMAZED!

Premier Doug Ford didn't mince words. He publicly declared the Metro Toronto Convention Centre “one of the worst convention centres anywhere in the world,” setting the stage for a dramatic announcement.

Ford then hinted at a solution: a massive, “absolutely spectacular” new facility. This wouldn’t be a simple upgrade, but a sprawling, two-million-square-foot complex designed to redefine Toronto’s convention landscape.

The announcement came during a visit to the very centre he criticized, a building opened in 1984 and expanded in 1997. He promised details were forthcoming, teasing a reveal that would be a “shock and awe” moment for everyone.

Whispers suggest the province is focusing on land at Exhibition Place. This location would strategically connect with the Ontario Line subway extension, currently under construction and slated for completion in the early 2030s, offering unparalleled accessibility.

Ford’s motivation is clear: Toronto is losing business. Large-scale conventions are actively seeking venues elsewhere due to the limitations of the current MTCC, a problem costing the province significant economic opportunities.

A recent report from the Auditor General of Ontario confirmed Ford’s concerns. Over the past two decades, the MTCC has lost 20 international conventions simply because they outgrew the space, representing a staggering $490 million in lost economic impact.

The assessment of the current facility isn’t just political rhetoric. The MTCC board itself reportedly told Ford it ranks among the worst globally – 24th out of 25 – a deeply unacceptable position for a world-class city and province.

The scale of the project comes with a hefty price tag. While Ford hasn’t provided a firm number, he estimates the new convention centre will cost “a few billion dollars,” a significant investment in Toronto’s future.

The existing Metro Toronto Convention Centre is a Crown corporation, operating under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport. Its future remains uncertain as the province prepares to unveil its ambitious new plan.

Ford’s blunt assessment and bold vision signal a major shift in Toronto’s approach to attracting large-scale events. The promise of a world-class facility aims to reclaim lost ground and position the city as a premier destination for international conventions.
