In the opening seventy-two hours of Operation Epic Fury, U.S. forces have engaged over 1,700 targets within Iran, initiating a sweeping military campaign. The operation’s core objective is the systematic dismantling of the Iranian regime’s security apparatus and the neutralization of perceived, immediate threats.
The strikes have been meticulously focused on crippling the heart of Iran’s military command and its capacity to strike. Command and control centers, including the IRGC Joint Headquarters and Aerospace Forces Headquarters, have been directly targeted. Integrated air defense systems and critical ballistic missile sites were also neutralized.
Beyond land-based targets, the operation extends to Iran’s naval forces. Iranian Navy ships and submarines, along with anti-ship missile sites and vital military communication networks, have been engaged. This demonstrates a comprehensive effort to disrupt Iran’s ability to project power across all operational environments.
Notably, nuclear facilities have not been included among the targets. Officials emphasize that the operation is prioritizing locations presenting an “imminent threat,” specifically assets capable of launching missile attacks, sustaining naval operations, or coordinating defensive responses.
The sheer scale of assets deployed underscores the complexity and ambition of this campaign. Strategic bombers – B-1, B-2, and B-52 – have flown alongside a diverse array of fighter jets, including F-15, F-16, F-18, and advanced stealth fighters like the F-22 and F-35.
Supporting these air assets are A-10 attack jets, EA-18G electronic warfare aircraft, airborne early warning systems, and communication relay aircraft. Ground-based missile defense systems, such as Patriot and THAAD, are also deployed, alongside mobile artillery rocket systems.
The naval component includes nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and guided-missile destroyers, complemented by maritime patrol aircraft, reconnaissance planes, and unmanned aerial vehicles like the MQ-9 Reaper. Counter-drone systems, refueling tankers, and transport aircraft complete the extensive force posture.
Operation Epic Fury, with its rapid succession of over 1,700 strikes, represents a large-scale, multi-domain campaign designed to systematically dismantle Iran’s command infrastructure, air defenses, missile capabilities, and naval assets. The operation is a deliberate and forceful attempt to degrade Iran’s military power.
The operation has come at a cost. Six U.S. service members have been killed during the initial phase of the campaign. A tragic friendly fire incident in Kuwait resulted in the loss of three F-15 fighter jets.
Intelligence reports indicate that at least 48 high-ranking Iranian leaders have been killed in coordinated U.S.-Israeli operations. These strikes are aimed at disrupting the chain of command and weakening the regime’s ability to respond.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the mission’s primary focus is the “destruction of their ballistic missile capabilities, and their ability to manufacture them,” alongside neutralizing the threat posed by Iran’s navy to international shipping lanes.
Despite the intensity of the operation, officials, including War Secretary Pete Hegseth, have clarified that regime change is not the primary objective. The stated goal remains the neutralization of immediate threats and the degradation of Iran’s military capabilities.
