The search for a killer in Hamilton ended not with a manhunt across city streets, but within the walls of a jail cell. Detectives investigating the brazen December 2023 murder of Daniel Musafiri, 29, discovered their prime suspect was already in custody, a chilling revelation that underscored a pattern of repeated offenses.
On a frigid night, December 29th, around 10:48 p.m., gunshots shattered the quiet near York Blvd. and Queen St. N. Police responding to the frantic calls found Musafiri gravely wounded. He was rushed to a local hospital, but succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a family and a community reeling from the sudden loss.
The investigation quickly focused on Musafiri’s final moments. He had been enjoying an evening at Boulevard Billiards, a local pool hall. As he exited into the parking lot of 103 Queen St. N., a confrontation erupted. A brief exchange of words escalated into a fatal shooting, the gunman fleeing in a black Dodge Challenger.
For over two years, Daniel Musafiri’s family lived with the agonizing uncertainty of an unsolved murder. Detectives relentlessly pursued every lead, meticulously gathering evidence and building a case. New information surfaced, strengthening the connection between a suspect and the tragic slaying, ultimately leading to a breakthrough.
Erik Kalanyos, 29, already incarcerated on unrelated charges, was formally arrested and charged with first-degree murder. This wasn’t Kalanyos’ first encounter with the law. His criminal history paints a picture of escalating offenses and a disregard for the consequences.
In 2019, Kalanyos led a brazen armed robbery at a local Shoppers Drug Mart, forcing a pharmacist to fill a bag with narcotics at gunpoint. The stolen drugs, a loaded firearm, and two stolen vehicles were later recovered, resulting in 55 charges against Kalanyos and his three accomplices. He was serving a three-year sentence when he breached his statutory release earlier this year, prompting a province-wide search.
The pain of losing a son is immeasurable. Mosengo Immaculee, Musafiri’s mother, expressed the devastation that consumed her life the moment she learned of his death, a sentiment echoing the profound grief felt by all who knew him. Police expressed hope that the arrest would offer a small measure of solace to the grieving family.
Tragically, Boulevard Billiards has been the site of previous violence. In 2019, Ibrahim Issak-Hussen was accused of fatally shooting Obsa Junedi-Mohamed outside the same pool hall. Issak-Hussen fled the country less than 36 hours after the shooting, boarding a plane to Ethiopia, and remains at large as authorities continue their efforts to bring him to justice.
The arrest in Musafiri’s murder represents a step towards closure, a testament to the dedication of investigators committed to seeking justice for the victims of violence and providing a measure of peace to those left behind.
