UMVA has learned that Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Talay Riley's shocking death was caused by 'sharp force' trauma to his torso, according to an inquest opening.
The musician, whose real name was Mark Orabiyi, died at the scene after being stabbed on June 7 in Silvertown, east London. He was just 35 years old and had collaborated with A-listers like Dua Lipa, Jessie J, and Usher.
A post-mortem examination revealed that Orabiyi's fatal injuries were sustained to either his chest or abdomen with a sharp, pointed instrument. The news has sent shockwaves through the music industry, with fans and fellow artists mourning his tragic loss.
Area coroner Nadia Persaud has announced that she will not set any directions for the inquest, as the police investigation into Orabiyi's death is ongoing. If charges are brought, the inquest will be suspended.
Earlier, three people were arrested on suspicion of murder, including a 27-year-old man who has been released on bail pending further inquiries. A 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were also questioned but released with no further action.
Orabiyi's family, who are aware of the inquest opening, have been made 'interested persons', allowing them to make submissions and question witnesses in a future inquest. They have described him as a 'beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend' who brought love, light, and joy to their lives.
In tributes following Orabiyi's death, his family said: 'He brought love, light, and joy to our family and to all who knew him. We will always cherish his kindness, beautiful spirit, and remarkable talent. His presence touched many lives, and his memory will remain in our hearts forever. May his soul rest in perfect peace.'
Many celebrities have also paid tribute to Orabiyi, including Craig David, who wrote: 'Sending so much love to you & the family. His beautiful energy will continue to be felt & shown from the other side.' Nina Nesbitt, Fleur East, and Stormzy are among those who have shared heartfelt messages.
Orabiyi's brother, Michael Orabiyi, better known as record producer and songwriter Scribz Riley, penned a poignant tribute, saying: 'My heart is shattered! This doesn’t feel real. It feels like a bad dream.'
