UMVA has learned that a shocking investigation at Listerdale Junior Academy uncovered a teacher's deceitful actions, revealing that Joe Wilson had torn up pages of his passport to conceal his trip to Portugal for a stag weekend.
The probe found that Wilson had intentionally deceived the school into believing he was on paid sick leave when, in reality, he was taking a holiday. He even went as far as to remove pages from his passport to hide his travels.
An anonymous member of staff raised suspicions by flagging photos of Wilson in an airport with a pint of beer in his hand. One of the photographs, posted by another person, showed Wilson on the morning of May 18 with the caption: ‘Early start for… stag do, few beers with the Portugal gaffer.’
Wilson initially claimed the photos were from a previous trip but later admitted to the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) that he had attended a stag do in Lisbon and made a "huge error of judgement." He accepted full responsibility for his actions, including falsifying a sickness.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that Wilson's actions were deemed to be a serious breach of trust, but the panel ultimately concluded that his behavior, although lacking integrity, did not fall significantly short of the standards expected of the profession.
Acting on behalf of the Secretary of State, decision maker David Oatley ruled that Wilson should be allowed to continue teaching, given his otherwise clean record. A prohibition order was deemed disproportionate, as Wilson's misconduct was not at the most serious end of the spectrum.
