The Texas Senate race is heating up, with Democratic candidate James Talarico facing scrutiny over his past comments about Christianity.
Talarico, a former state representative, once described himself as a “Christian who hates Christianity” during an appearance on a podcast.
The comments resurfaced as Talarico campaigns against Attorney General Ken Paxton in one of the country’s most closely watched Senate races.
Talarico has frequently highlighted his supposed Christian faith on the campaign trail, but his words have been called into question by Paxton supporters.
During the interview, Talarico praised the podcast host’s work and described the book Activist Theology as an inspiration.
However, Paxton’s campaign says Talarico’s comments fit a broader pattern of using Christianity as a shield to justify his ideas.
Talarico has also been criticized for his social media activity, with reports indicating that he follows several adult film performers, escorts, and OnlyFans models.
His campaign has denied that he uses these services, but insisted that he does not judge the women who do.
According to the latest polling average, Paxton holds a slender 0.8 percent lead over his opponent.
