An eighth person has been charged in connection with a foiled plot to target the Freedom 250 Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event at the White House. The alleged plot involved using explosive-laden drones to trigger a mass evacuation of the event, followed by directing fleeing crowds toward pre-positioned shooters.
A former key lawmaker, who is currently a candidate for Senate, has warned that escalating rhetoric on the left is contributing to an increase in violence. The lawmaker stated that certain language and ideologies can give people "permission" to take violent actions, and that this rhetoric must be controlled.
The eight suspects are accused of conspiring to use drones and firearms to carry out the attack. According to authorities, the suspects used online platforms to plan and coordinate their actions, including a Telegram chat and encrypted Signal chats.
The alleged plot was eventually foiled with the help of a tip from the mother of one of the suspects. The lawmaker praised law enforcement for stopping the plot in time, but noted that "self-radicalized" individuals can be harder to identify and pose a significant threat.
The lawmaker cited a recent attack on a Michigan synagogue as an example of how violent rhetoric can lead people to believe that political violence is acceptable. The attack involved a individual crashing a car into the synagogue, where over 100 children were inside.
The lawmaker expressed concern about the role of social media in contributing to political violence, stating that the violent rhetoric plastered online is "very, very concerning." The lawmaker emphasized that this type of rhetoric can feed into and encourage violent behavior.
The suspects allegedly acquired firearms, ammunition, ballistic gear, and other tactical equipment in preparation for the attack. The plot was reportedly planned to involve a "second wave" targeting the White House gate.
