The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee announced support for five new candidates as the midterm elections approach, with less than 100 days remaining.
The move comes amid Republican emphasis on recent victories by candidates linked to the Democratic Socialists of America, a far‑left organization that has unseated several incumbent Democrats.
The endorsed candidates are physician Amish Shah in Arizona’s 1st district, former high school principal Pia Dandiya in Florida’s 22nd district, former chaplain Lindsay James in Iowa’s 2nd district, math teacher and union leader Jake Johnson in Minnesota’s 1st district, and firefighter Sam Forstag in Montana’s 1st district.
Three of the targeted seats are currently held by Republicans who are either seeking re‑election or pursuing other offices, while one is an open seat after the incumbent lost a gubernatorial primary and another will be vacant due to retirement.
In Florida, the 22nd district was redrawn to become more competitive; the incumbent is running in the neighboring 23rd district.
The assistance is part of the DCCC’s “Red to Blue” program, which allocates funding and resources to candidates deemed competitive.
Committee Chair Suzan DelBene said voters are frustrated by rising prices and a perceived lack of accountability, and expressed confidence that new leadership can address those concerns.
Republican leaders plan a nationwide tour in August aimed at reversing long‑standing trends and retaining control of the House.
Historically, the president’s party experiences significant losses in midterm elections, a pattern that adds pressure to the upcoming campaign.
Republicans have pointed to recent progressive victories as evidence of a leftward shift within the Democratic Party, while Democratic leaders argue that Republicans have failed to alleviate everyday economic pressures.
