A recent survey of 1,200 transport workers revealed that nearly two-thirds felt the government’s P5,000 cash assistance was insufficient to cover their operating expenses.
Only 35.7% of respondents considered the grant adequate, while 63.6% reported that it fell short of their needs.
The aid was distributed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development during a national energy emergency and was aimed at approximately 2.2 million transport workers nationwide.
Despite concerns about the amount, 96.3% of participants said the grant helped them continue or return to work.
Seven in ten respondents indicated that a minimum of P8,000 would be adequate, with P10,000 emerging as the most frequently cited amount.
The survey also identified gaps in transport worker databases, noting that additional eligible beneficiaries were found through transport network companies. Recommendations include reviewing benefit levels, improving payment systems, and strengthening beneficiary registries.
