The Strokes' debut album ‘Is This It’ reshaped music 25 years later

The Strokes' debut album ‘Is This It’ reshaped music 25 years later

Marking its 25th anniversary, the debut album that reshaped modern rock continues to be hailed as a pivotal work in music history.

The New York quartet—Julian Casablancas, Albert Hammond Jr., Nick Valensi, Fabrizio Moretti and Nikolai Fraiture—burst onto the scene with singles such as “Last Nite,” “Hard to Explain” and “Someday.” The record reached number two on the UK album chart and peaked at number 33 on the US Billboard 200.

Originally released in Australia on July 30, 2001, the album’s stark cover featuring a gloved hand on a woman’s hip has become instantly recognizable. Its distorted guitar sound sparked a wave of new guitar‑driven bands and helped revive the indie dance floor.

Producer Gordon Raphael recalled recording the album in a modest East Village basement studio during early 2001. He noted the band’s meticulous preparation and refusal to tolerate any musical imperfections, describing them as unusually disciplined for their age.

Raphael sensed a worldwide audience even before the tracks were finished, noting the intense buzz surrounding a band that had yet to play major New York venues but was already touring abroad and signing with a label.

Radio veteran Steve Lamacq highlighted the album’s effortless quality, saying it set the template for guitar bands on both sides of the Atlantic throughout the decade.

He added that the record reopened dance floors to guitar‑driven anthems, prompting a surge of new groups that blended indie rock with club energy, a trend that defined the era’s nightlife.

Guitarist Felix White explained that hearing the album was a “lightbulb moment,” emphasizing how the songs fit together like a precise puzzle rather than relying on visual style.

White recalled supporting the band on tour, describing the experience of seeing them backstage as “magical” and noting their polished presence onstage.

Former music‑journalism editor Conor McNicholas remembered the band headlining a major festival just a year after their debut, marking a clear shift in popular taste.

He described the album as a turning point that reignited interest in forming bands, leading to a rapid emergence of new acts and a revitalized indie scene within a single year.
