SEX WORKER HERO HONORED: Governor General SHOCKS the Nation!

Rideau Hall resonated with quiet dignity on Thursday as a diverse group of Canadians received the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Order of Canada. The ceremony, presided over by Governor General Mary Simon, wasn’t simply an awarding of medals; it was a recognition of lives dedicated to pushing boundaries and shaping a more inclusive Canada.

Governor General Simon spoke of a collective journey – a national movement toward reconciliation, truth, and inclusion. She emphasized that each honoree, through their unique contributions, had not only achieved greatness but had also illuminated a path for others, reminding everyone of the profound impact of compassion and generosity.

Among those elevated to Companion, the Order’s highest level, was retired Supreme Court Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella. Her decades-long commitment to constitutional law and the advancement of equality and human rights, both within Canada and internationally, earned her this prestigious distinction.

Mellissa Fung, a journalist whose courage became a symbol of resilience, was invested as an Officer. Her unwavering dedication to reporting from conflict zones was tragically tested when she was kidnapped in Afghanistan in 2008, enduring four weeks of captivity before her safe return.

The ranks of Members swelled with equally inspiring figures. Lee Edward Errett, a pioneer in cardiac care associated with St. Michael’s Hospital, joined the Order for his global impact on heart health. His work represents a lifetime devoted to saving lives and advancing medical knowledge.

Frances Marjorie Shaver, a dedicated advocate for sex workers and a professor at Concordia University, was also recognized. Her tireless efforts to champion the rights and dignity of a marginalized community demonstrated a profound commitment to social justice.

The familiar face of George Stroumboulopoulos, a beloved entertainment broadcaster known for his work with Much Music and CBC, was among those invested as a Member. His influence on Canadian pop culture and his engaging interviewing style have touched countless lives.

The artistic community was also celebrated, with Metis artist Christi Belcourt receiving recognition for her stunning works inspired by traditional Metis beadwork. Remarkably, one of her vibrant canvases now graces the ballroom of Rideau Hall itself, a testament to her enduring legacy.

Editorial cartoonist Michael de Adder, auto market expert Flavio Volpe, rounded out the list of inductees, each representing a unique field of excellence. The Governor General’s investiture wasn’t just a ceremony; it was a powerful affirmation of the values that define Canada and the individuals who champion them.
