A powerful wave of change is building in Eastern Africa, driven by the very generation most impacted by a shifting climate. In Nairobi, a groundbreaking coalition has been launched, placing young people squarely at the center of the fight for a sustainable future and secure food systems.
The IGAD Regional Youth Coalition on Climate and Climate-Resilient Agri-Food Systems isn’t just another initiative; it’s a recognition of Africa’s unique strength – a burgeoning youth population brimming with potential. Officials emphasized that harnessing this energy is no longer an option, but a necessity for meaningful progress.
The region faces stark realities. Nearly 70 percent of the land is arid or semi-arid, and rain-fed agriculture remains the lifeblood of economies. Recent climate shocks have already displaced over 40 million people, deepening food insecurity and threatening livelihoods. Yet, within this crisis lies opportunity.
More than 60 percent of the IGAD region’s population is under 25, making them disproportionately vulnerable to climate change, but also uniquely positioned to drive solutions. This coalition aims to transform fragmented youth efforts into a unified, regionally-supported force for innovation and change.
The coalition will focus on mobilizing young people, improving access to vital climate information, and fostering the growth of climate-smart agriculture and green businesses. Crucially, it will amplify youth voices in regional and global conversations about climate action.
Experts highlighted the urgent need for improved climate prediction and technology adoption. From devastating droughts to catastrophic floods – as recently witnessed in Mogadishu and Nairobi – the region is grappling with increasingly frequent and intense climate events. Adaptation is no longer a future concern, but a present-day imperative.
The coalition isn’t intended to operate in isolation. Leaders stressed the importance of collective action, recognizing that no single organization can tackle these complex challenges alone. It’s envisioned as a platform to connect youth, institutions, and partners, fostering inclusive and locally-driven solutions.
Agriculture, particularly vulnerable to climate fluctuations, demands a new generation of innovators. Young people are already emerging as key drivers of change, increasing productivity, creating jobs, and providing essential services to farmers, but they need support – access to finance, land, and critical information.
This launch isn’t simply a symbolic gesture, but a firm commitment to action. Young leaders emphasized their role not as passive beneficiaries, but as active innovators and first responders to the climate crisis. The coalition will empower grassroots initiatives and scale them up for regional impact.
The goal is to move beyond mere participation to genuine leadership, transforming ideas into tangible results, and expanding local successes into regional transformation. This platform is designed to give young people the power to shape policy, build thriving enterprises, and ultimately, define the future of the region.
Sustained partnerships and investment in youth-led solutions will be critical to the coalition’s success. As one official stated, “This is your platform. Our responsibility now is to ensure it delivers real impact and transforms communities across the region.”
Following a successful technical session to validate the coalition’s framework, the stage is now set for coordinated, youth-led climate action across the IGAD region – a beacon of hope for a more resilient and sustainable future.
