The term socialism has long been viewed with skepticism in American politics, often associated with a rejection of the capitalistic system that has driven the country's rise to global superpower status.
However, the US has a mixed system, with government-run programs such as Social Security, government-run healthcare systems for the elderly and the poor, and various initiatives to support farmers, small businesses, schools, veterans, and the unemployed.
Today, socialists are gaining momentum within the Democratic Party, with their most prominent champion, Zohran Mamdani, pushing the party dramatically to the left, particularly on foreign policy issues.
This shift to the left has been met with enthusiasm from some Democrats, but it also presents a gift to the Republican Party, which is eager to run against these new-wave socialists in the coming years.
President Trump has jumped on the opportunity, labeling the three far-left candidates that Mamdani supported as "Communists," a term that evokes memories of the McCarthyism of the 1950s.
While some Democrats are embracing socialism, many others are expressing alarm at the party's shift to the left, with some even questioning whether the Democratic Party can remain viable with such extreme views.
One of the most contentious issues is the party's stance on Israel, with many socialists openly criticizing the country and its policies, including some who have gone so far as to call for Israel's destruction.
Some of the most extreme views have been expressed by individuals who have been endorsed by Mamdani, including Darializa Avila Chevalier, who has called for defunding police and prisons, abolishing borders, and nationalizing major industries.
Chevalier has also been accused of making inflammatory comments, including calling Joe Biden a "rapist" and using the F-word against Kamala Harris, and has been criticized for her stance on Israel and her failure to condemn terrorist attacks against the country.
Other socialist candidates have also been criticized for their views, including Aber Kawas, who claimed that America deserved the 9/11 attacks, and Chris Rabb, who blamed the Bondi Beach massacre of Australian Jews on "Zionists."
As the Democratic Party continues to shift to the left, some Democrats are pushing back against the party's new direction, with Rep. Tom Suozzi and 12 other lawmakers launching a campaign called "Promise to America," which declares their support for capitalism, police, and patriotism.
The Suozzi group is small, but it aims to send a message that the party is not captive to the extreme views of its socialist wing.
James Carville has also weighed in, expressing his outrage at the views of some socialist candidates, including Chevalier, and declaring that he is not in the same party as them.
