Senator Chris Van Hollen publicly championed the case of Ever Alvarenga Rios, presenting him as a vulnerable “asylum seeker” in need of protection. The narrative quickly unfolded, fueled by claims of aggressive actions by federal agents and a denial of basic legal rights.
According to Rios’s attorney, the incident began with an ICE vehicle “violently rear-ending” his client’s car while he was driving. Rios was subsequently hospitalized with injuries reported to his head, chest, back, and hands, prompting accusations of excessive force and questionable ICE tactics.
The attorney further alleged that ICE was actively blocking access to Rios, initially citing medical needs, then shifting to paperwork issues, and finally, a blanket denial of legal visits while he remained in the hospital. This sparked concerns about due process and the rights of those seeking refuge.
Senator Van Hollen echoed these concerns, stating that ICE’s actions were “endangering our communities and violating the Constitution.” He painted a picture of a man simply on his way to work, unjustly targeted and denied fundamental legal protections.
However, the story dramatically shifted with a statement from the Department of Homeland Security. The narrative of an asylum seeker seeking safety dissolved as authorities revealed Rios was, in fact, a Honduran national with a final deportation order dating back to 2018.
The DHS account detailed a far different sequence of events. Rather than a malicious collision, Rios allegedly fled from ICE agents at high speed, intentionally causing a multi-car pileup by abruptly slamming on his brakes.
Following the collision, Rios attempted to evade capture on foot before ultimately being apprehended. This revelation completely undermined the initial claims and cast a new light on the entire incident, exposing a stark contrast between the initial portrayal and the documented reality.
