A startling claim emerged from Donald Trump, alleging Iran’s newly appointed president has requested a ceasefire. The former US president stated he would only consider such a move under a specific, and stark, condition: the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The announcement, posted on Truth Social, immediately raised eyebrows due to its ambiguity. Trump didn’t explicitly name the Iranian president he was referencing, leaving observers to question who had purportedly made the appeal.
Iran’s current president, Masoud Pezeshkian, assumed office in July of this year. Just yesterday, Pezeshkian publicly expressed Iran’s willingness to end the conflict, but stipulated that “essential conditions” must first be met.
Trump’s statement went significantly further, asserting that Iran had directly requested the United States to halt hostilities. His words painted a picture of a dramatically altered leadership in Tehran.
“Iran’s New Regime President, much less Radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE!” Trump wrote. The message then took a decidedly aggressive turn.
He continued, stating that any consideration would be contingent on the Strait of Hormuz being “open, free, and clear.” Failing that, Trump declared, the US would continue to inflict devastating consequences, threatening to push Iran “back to the Stone Ages.”
