Duterte Trial Nears as Prosecutors Finalize Case for Impeachment Proceedings

The House prosecution panel is ready to proceed with the impeachment trial of Vice-President Sara Duterte-Carpio on July 6, according to its lead prosecutor. The panel has been preparing for the trial since the 19th Congress and is confident in its ability to present its case effectively.

The lead prosecutor expressed her readiness to begin the trial, stating that the House prosecutors and private prosecutors are all prepared to present their evidence and arguments. She added that the prosecution is committed to protecting the interests of the Filipino people and upholding the Constitution.

The prosecution has finalized its pre-trial order, listing 57 witnesses and submitting its comments on the matter. However, the lead prosecutor declined to discuss the contents of the comments, citing the need to maintain a strategic approach to the trial.

Private prosecutor Lorna Patajo-Kapunan noted that few technical matters remain before the prosecution begins presenting its evidence on Monday. She also emphasized the importance of conducting discussions on certain matters, such as the contents of a sealed Bureau of Internal Revenue box, in an open and transparent manner.

The prosecution is facing four articles of impeachment alleging misuse of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery, and an assassination plot against President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos, and Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez. Vice-President Duterte has denied the allegations and the Senate impeachment court will ultimately decide the outcome of the trial.

The lead prosecutor called on the public to pray for the conviction of the respondent and for the successful outcome of the trial. She also expressed her gratitude to the senator-judges and the country for their support.

The trial is expected to begin with the opening statements of both sides and the taking up of pending motions, with the prosecution set to present its evidence and arguments in the coming days.

The House prosecution panel remains committed to presenting a strong case and upholding the Constitution, despite the challenges and complexities of the trial. The outcome of the trial will have significant implications for the country and the office of the Vice-President.
