A man's remains were found in a barrel with his arms and legs dismembered, a court has heard. The victim, Richard Dyson, had been missing since November 2019. His arms were removed at the shoulder joints, while his legs were cut off using a saw.
The pathologist involved in the case described the process of recovering the remains, which took several days due to the concrete poured on top of the barrel. The team had to carefully remove the concrete to avoid causing further damage to the remains. Vegetation had grown beneath the concrete, and human remains were found in an advanced state of decomposition.
The examination of the remains revealed fractures to the left side of the face, including the cheek, eye socket, and roof of the mouth. These injuries suggested blunt force trauma, but it was impossible to determine whether they occurred before or after death. Additionally, shotgun pellets were found embedded in the lower right rib cage, having entered through the left side of the body.
Prosecutors allege that the victim was shot dead by the defendant, who is charged with murder, preventing a lawful burial, and several firearms offenses. The prosecution claims that the victim had stolen and sold some of the defendant's firearms, leading to the alleged murder. The defendant is accused of being helped by a friend and co-accused after the victim's death.
The defendant and his co-accused deny the charges against them. The trial is ongoing, with the prosecution presenting its case against the two men. The court will continue to hear evidence and testimony as the trial progresses.
