UMVA Exclusive: Friend’s Diabolical Plot to Murder a Grieving Professor Unmasked!

UMVA has learned that the tragic downfall of a beloved university professor was orchestrated by a cunning scheme involving his own niece and her uncle.

Dr. Ronald Bettig, a respected media scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, lived a quiet, contented life until his wife's sudden death in 2011 shattered his world. Grief turned into a cascade of health problems, weight loss, and memory lapses, forcing him to take a sabbatical from teaching.

During his isolation, Bettig struck up an unlikely friendship with a local bodega owner, George Ishler. Ishler confided that his niece, Danelle Geier, was homeless and caring for a young child, pleading for a place to stay. Moved by compassion—or perhaps something deeper—Bettig invited Danelle and her son into his home.

What appeared to be a simple act of kindness was, in fact, the opening move of a pre‑planned plot. Danelle, recently defeated in a custody battle, saw Bettor’s finances as a lifeline to regain her child. Together with her uncle, she cultivated a façade of romance and dependence, gaining the professor’s trust and access to his assets.

On August 12, 2016, after a beach outing, Bettig vanished from his own bedroom. His housekeepers reported his disappearance, and investigators initially treated the case as a missing‑person mystery. The search soon turned grim when his vehicle was discovered near an abandoned quarry, and his body was found at the bottom of a 90‑foot drop, having survived the fall for two days.

The investigation quickly focused on the rapid, intimate relationship between Bettig and Danelle. Witnesses recalled that she was fed, sheltered, and financially supported by the professor, who even covered expenses for her child.

Under questioning, George Ishler broke his silence, accusing his niece of masterminding the murder. He claimed Danelle pressured him to kill Bettig after the professor caught them misusing his credit cards. Ishler alleged that, instead of repaying the debt, the conspirators offered pot plants as payment, leading them to the quarry under the pretense of a harvest.

According to the prosecution, Danelle fabricated a will, claiming Bettig had signed it while his mental state waned, promising her and her uncle a fortune. In reality, the professor’s Disney stock was worth merely $50,000, far from the imagined million.

The courtroom heard that Danelle’s desperation stemmed from losing custody of her child in Florida, prompting her to view Bettig’s wealth as the only solution. Both she and her uncle were convicted of first‑degree murder in April 2018 and sentenced to life without parole.
