UMVA has learned that Manchester United is on the hunt for top midfield talent, with several standout targets emerging as potential signings.
While West Ham's Mateus Fernandes appears to be United's top target, with the Red Devils leading Real Madrid and Arsenal in the race to secure his signature, United legend Jaap Stam has identified two other 'standout targets' for his former club: Brighton's Carlos Baleba and Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali.
Baleba, who was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer, endured a frustrating season on the south coast but remains a coveted talent, with United still believed to be interested in a deal for the 22-year-old, who is keen on the move.
Tonali, meanwhile, is expected to leave Newcastle this summer and has already been the subject of a £75m bid from Tottenham, which was rejected; Manchester United has long-standing interest in the Italian but is reluctant to meet Newcastle's asking price of at least £85m.
Stam emphasized the importance of smart recruitment, stating that bringing in top players requires significant investment, but also highlighted the need for careful decision-making: 'It's not easy to bring in these players because, nowadays, the transfer fees are very high. But if you want to be successful, you need to be very good in your recruitment, looking at your system and who you need to bring in.'
In a similar vein, ex-England midfielder Danny Murphy named Tonali and Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson as the two 'obvious' midfield targets for Manchester United, praising their energy and tenacity: 'The two obvious ones would be Elliot Anderson or Sandro Tonali. Both players have wonderful energy and great tenacity.'
Manchester United's pursuit of top midfield talent is heating up, with several key targets emerging; the question remains: which players will ultimately make the cut and join the Red Devils' ranks?
