David JC Austin, a renowned rose breeder, died on July 20 at the age of 67. His passing occurred at his home in Shropshire after a diagnosis of Creutzfeldt‑Jakob disease, a fatal neurological disorder.
Austin led the family‑run David Austin Roses for more than three decades, transforming the enterprise from a specialist nursery into a globally recognised name among horticultural enthusiasts. The company, founded by his father David C. H. Austin, became synonymous with the development of new rose varieties.
His contributions to horticulture were highlighted by fellow gardener Monty Don, who emphasized the enduring legacy of millions of roses cultivated under Austin’s guidance. Don noted that the roses will continue to enrich lives for generations.
The National Trust also expressed sorrow, acknowledging the impact of Austin’s work on its gardens and visitors. The organization praised his lifelong commitment to rose breeding and its role in enhancing public enjoyment of garden spaces.
